Colleges in Action

Recently I wrote about colleges taking the lead in sustainable food programs in their communities.  I want to add two more colleges to the list:

Harvard University has the Food Literacy Project and Wayne State University has SEED Wayne.

Green Pea of the Day: Will Allen

A pioneer in urban agriculture, Will Allen just won $500,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 

Will is the founder of Growing Power, a Wisconsin based non-profit that develops community-based food systems.  Their goal is to provide "high quality, safe, healthy, affordable food for all residents in the community."

Colleges taking the lead in sustainability initiatives

Since I posted the story yesterday about Lafayette's Jennifer Bell and her campus sustainability initiatives, I've seen stories about a quite a few colleges that are on the same track.  UNH has some great initiatives.  Knox College in Illinois has a Sustainability Task Force, comprised of students, faculty and lead by the president of the college. 

Biologist Sandra Steingraber recently spoke at Knox and she addressed how universities can make a difference in how food is grown, used and distributed. Colleges can help build a sustainable society, she says.

Check out how colleges across the U.S. rate on their "Sustainability Report Card."  My alma mater, Amherst College received a B+.

Brita has some stiff competition: ZeroWater

There is a petition petition circulating urging Clorox (which owns Brita) to develop a method of recycling their water filters.  There is currently a system in place in Europe.  But for some reason, they can't seem to establish that program here in the U.S. 

Well, now Brita has some competition.  ZeroWater recycles 90% of their filters.  Now you can have filtered water, without filling up the landfill.

Slow Food Nation Closing Discussion

I didn't get to Slow Food Nation this year, so I was so happy to find video from their closing panel featuring these heavy hitters: Wendell Berry, Carlo Petrini, Alice Waters, Michael Pollan, Vandana Shiva, and Eric Schlosser.  The discussion was moderated by Corby Kummer, the venerable food columnist for The Atlantic. 

It's long but totally worth it.
